It’s in Giving that we Receive
What is tithing and why is it good for us??
Tithing is a practice of giving a percentage of your income (generally 10%) to a spiritual organization or worthy cause (something that honors God and his love for creation). It can be described as a spiritual practice somewhat like prayer or fasting.
So why is it good to tithe??
“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
Luke 6:38 NIV
Giving joyously is a gift to the giver. When we give with an open and happy heart we grow spiritually. When you look at tithing as an act of acknowledgment that everything we have comes from God, we give to those in need gratefully and without expectation to receive in return.
Tithing then gives a greater faith in God as a source of abundance. The more you look at money and wealth as a form of energy, the more you can allow God to enter your finances. The more you think of others and their needs, your consciousness and compassion expand and you grow spiritually. Tithing is in fact an act of purification of our hearts and therefore our connection to God.
As you actively give to others you, in turn, give God the responsibility of taking care of you. You can be free of the fear of not having enough money because you KNOW that it is in giving that we receive.
“In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ””
Acts 20:35 NIV
So why not try it, dedicated to giving every week for the next month. As you make your tithe say this prayer:
“Thank you, God, for blessing me with abundance, wealth, health, and happiness.
I know that it is in giving that we receive and I am grateful for the ability to give freely and joyously. Thank you for removing all thoughts of lack or fear from my mind as I trust in your grace and abundance. Thank you for filling me with your faith, love, and kindness. It really is a blessing to give this tithe. All glory be to you God, in Jesus name Amen.”
Do you tithe? How have you found this practice to assist your spiritual growth and connection with God?
